Abstract

Hypertension is a major non-communicable disease that significantly elevates the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and lethal cardiovascular complications. Persistently high systemic blood pressure often manifests without prominent warning symptoms, yet frequently presents clinically as acute headaches. Slow Deep Breathing (SDB) serves as a valuable non-pharmacological nursing intervention to directly promote hemodynamic stability and alleviate pain through parasympathetic activation. This case study aims to evaluate the implementation of Slow Deep Breathing therapy in managing the nursing diagnosis of acute pain in a hypertensive resident (PM D) at UPT PSTW Pandaan (Kemuning Room). A gerontological nursing case study design was applied. The intervention consisted of daily Slow Deep Breathing sessions administered over three consecutive days. Clinical outcomes were measured using a standardized pain rating scale alongside blood pressure monitoring before and after each session. Following three days of SDB exercises, the resident demonstrated marked clinical improvement in acute pain management. Pain scale scores exhibited a consistent and progressive decline, confirming the therapeutic efficacy of SDB in mitigating hypertension-induced acute pain. Routine application of Slow Deep Breathing therapy effectively reduces acute pain intensity in elderly hypertensive residents. SDB is recommended as an accessible, non-invasive nursing intervention in institutionalized elderly care settings. Longitudinal studies evaluating the long-term therapeutic efficacy of SDB are suggested for future research.
