Abstract

Hyperthermia is a common pediatric nursing diagnosis caused primarily by infectious processes. If not managed effectively, hyperthermia can precipitate severe clinical complications, including dehydration, heightened metabolic demands, physical discomfort, and febrile seizures. The integration of a Water Tepid Sponge and a cooling Plaster Pad offers a promising adjunctive non-pharmacological strategy to facilitate thermal reduction and enhance physiological comfort. This study aims to describe the implementation and evaluate the clinical outcomes of combining a Water Tepid Sponge with a Plaster Pad in a pediatric patient presenting with hyperthermia. A nursing case study design was utilized, following the standard nursing process framework (assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation). The intervention was administered over three consecutive days to a three-year-old child diagnosed with febrile seizures and hyperthermia. The protocol combined a Water Tepid Sponge bath (30–35°C for 15–20 minutes) followed by the application of a fever-reducing Plaster Pad for 1–2 hours, delivered alongside prescribed pharmacological antipyretics. Following the three-day intervention, the patient's core body temperature exhibited a gradual decline from a baseline of 38.7°C to a normothermic 36.6°C. Clinical evaluation demonstrated noticeable improvements in comfort, marked by reduced irritability, enhanced sleep quality, and overall clinical stabilization. Combining a Water Tepid Sponge with a Plaster Pad serves as an effective supportive nursing intervention to accelerate body temperature reduction and promote comfort in pediatric hyperthermia. This non-pharmacological approach works synergistically with, but does not substitute, standard antipyretic pharmacological therapy.
