Abstract

The trading of the 75,000 rupiah special edition banknote reflects a shift in functional value that risks triggering speculative behavior and regulatory ambiguity regarding Sharia compliance in monetary transactions. This qualitative study employing a library research design with a descriptive-analytical approach aimed to analyze the market mechanism surrounding the trading of 75,000 rupiah special edition banknotes and assess its alignment with Islamic economic principles. Data were gathered through a comprehensive review of relevant scientific literature and normative legal materials. Findings revealed that the special edition currency has undergone a functional transformation from a standard medium of exchange into a collectible commodity whose market value is driven by rarity, historical significance, aesthetic design, and collector demand, frequently causing its market price to appreciate beyond its face nominal value. The study concludes that within the framework of Islamic economics, this practice is contextual: it is permissible provided the banknote is treated genuinely as a collectible item and transacted without elements of usury (riba), uncertainty (gharar), or gambling (maisir); however, if driven primarily by speculation, it risks violating Sharia principles, thereby underscoring the necessity of clear ethical and legal boundaries to uphold the objectives of Islamic jurisprudence (Maqasid al-Shariah).
