Abstract

Versi Bahasa Inggris (Abstract)

As society becomes increasingly modern, the recontextualization of the concept of tabarruj in QS. al-Ahzab [33]: 33 has become increasingly urgent amidst the transformation of digital public spaces characterized by visual culture, identity performativity, and cross-gender self-display practices. Although several studies of at-Tabari and Quraish Shihab, as well as comparisons between Asy-Sya‘rawi and az-Zuhaili regarding women's participation in the public sphere, existing contextualizations remain limited to the physical appearance of women in conventional public spaces and have not adequately addressed the phenomenon of cross-gender self-display in digital environments. Therefore, a recontextualization of the meaning of tabarruj is needed through contemporary Qur’anic interpretation, particularly through a comparative analysis of Quraish Shihab’s and Amina Wadud’s interpretations of QS. al-Ahzab [33]: 33. This study aims to comparatively analyze Quraish Shihab’s interpretation in Tafsir Al-Misbah and Amina Wadud’s interpretation in Qur’an and Woman. Employing a qualitative library research approach, the study utilizes content analysis, comparative analysis, and contextual hermeneutics. Quraish Shihab situates tabarruj within the socio-historical context of pre-Islamic society as a preventive ethical principle intended to preserve dignity and social order, while still focusing primarily on women as the main subject of the verse. In contrast, Amina Wadud interprets tabarruj as a universal moral principle grounded in gender justice, applying equally to both men and women. The comparative analysis reveals a shift in the meaning of tabarruj from a gender-based prohibition toward an inclusive and contextual ethic of self-representation. In the modern era, marked by rapid technological advancement, tabarruj is no longer confined to physical appearance or clothing but encompasses all forms of excessive self-expression that may diminish human dignity. This study contributes to the development of contemporary Qur’anic exegesis by offering an inclusive, cross-gender understanding of tabarruj that is relevant to the social dynamics of digital society.
