Abstract

The period facemask trend, involving the application of menstrual blood to facial skin for aesthetic purposes, has gained significant visibility across digital beauty culture and social media platforms, necessitating critical evaluation through Islamic bioethics. This normative qualitative library research aimed to examine the period facemask practice through the lenses of Islamic bioethics and Maqasid al-Shariah, focusing specifically on the protection of life (hifz al-nafs), preservation of dignity (hifz al-'ird), public interest (maslahah), and harm prevention (mafsadah). Data were gathered through a comprehensive review of Qur'anic texts, Islamic bioethical literature, medical research on menstruation and blood-derived aesthetic therapies, and scholarship on digital beauty trends. Findings revealed that current medical literature fails to establish the safety or dermatological efficacy of applying raw menstrual blood directly to the skin. Furthermore, the practice differs fundamental from clinical platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, which adheres to sterile preparation, professional oversight, and procedural standards. The study concludes that the period facemask raises significant ethical concerns regarding physical well-being, personal dignity, privacy, and the digital circulation of intimate biological material, establishing that ethical restraint is warranted due to unverified cosmetic claims and unmitigated health and dignity risks.
