Abstract

Auditory hallucinations represent a prevalent sensory perceptual alteration among patients with schizophrenia, distorting reality and impairing cognitive processes, behavior, communication, and social interactions, which necessitates supportive non-pharmacological interventions such as guided imagery to divert attention from hallucinatory stimuli. This case study focusing on a single patient with a nursing diagnosis of Sensory Perceptual Alteration: Auditory Hallucinations aimed to examine the implementation of guided imagery therapy in reducing hallucinatory responses. Data were collected via interviews, clinical observations, physical examinations, mental status examinations, and nursing documentation review, with interventions comprising trust-building, psychoeducation, and step-by-step guided imagery relaxation techniques. Post-intervention evaluation revealed that the patient exhibited increased composure, improved communicative focus, enhanced cooperation, and a reduced response to hallucinatory stimuli by adaptively redirecting focus. The study concludes that guided imagery serves as an effective non-pharmacological nursing intervention to mitigate auditory hallucination responses and facilitate clinical recovery in psychiatric nursing settings.
