Abstract
Enhancing students’ Self-awareness is a fundamental aspect of character development in Islamic boarding schools, yet daily mentoring practices that are heavily discipline-oriented often fail to adequately support students’ emotional and reflective growth. This study aims to analyze the role of dormitory mentors (wali asuh) in improving students’ Self-awareness through a humanistic approach based on the Share to care strategy at Al-Hasyimiyah, Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School. This research employed a qualitative case study design using observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques. The results show a significant transformation in the mentors’ roles from a control-centered approach to an empathetic, facilitative form of guidance characterized by active listening, open dialogue, and strengthened interpersonal relationships. The Share to care strategy effectively enhanced three main indicators of Self-awareness emotional expression, self-reflection, and social responsibility as reflected in students’ increased willingness to express themselves, consistency in self-evaluation, and active participation in social activities within the dormitory. Supporting factors included strong mentor–student relationships and a conducive learning environment, while challenges emerged from the non-ideal mentor–student ratio and demanding workloads. These findings affirm that the humanistic approach strongly contributes to students’ holistic Self-awareness development.
