Abstract
Reading comprehension is an essential skill in English language learning, yet
many junior high school students still experience difficulties in understanding reading
texts. ChatGPT has recently emerged as an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool that
supports English learning; however, its effectiveness in improving students' reading
comprehension has not been widely investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to
examine the effectiveness of ChatGPT-assisted instruction in improving students'
reading comprehension. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasiexperimental design. The population consisted of 516 students of SMPN 1 Paiton,
while the sample comprised 54 eighth-grade students selected through purposive
sampling. Data were collected using pre-test and post-test reading comprehension
tests and analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality test, homogeneity test, paired
samples t-test, independent samples t-test, and N-Gain analysis. The findings showed
that the experimental group achieved higher improvement than the control group. The
mean score of the experimental group increased from 50.96 to 85.77, while the
control group's mean score increased from 49.46 to 72.14. The independent samples
t-test indicated a significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.05), and the NGain analysis showed a high improvement in the experimental group (0.73) compared
with a medium improvement in the control group (0.46). These findings indicate that
ChatGPT-assisted instruction effectively supports students' reading comprehension.
Therefore, ChatGPT can be used as a supplementary instructional tool in English
reading instruction under teacher supervision.
