Abstract
Al-Qur'an memorization (tahfidz) education in modern Islamic educational institutions and pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) today is often trapped in a methodological disorientation that focuses solely on quantitative targets. The phenomenon of "rote verbalism"—where students (santri) are able to fluently recite verses but experience a void of meaning in the cognitive domain and a failure of internalization in the affective domain—has become a crucial challenge for the pesantren world. Consequently, noble Qur'anic values, such as patience (sabar), often fail to manifest in daily behavior. As a systemic effort to address this problem, several pesantren integrate the 3T+1M method (Talaqqi, Tafahhum, Tikrar, and Muraja'ah) to bridge the gap between text memorization and deep comprehension of meaning. This study aims to profoundly analyze the implementation of the 3T+1M method in facilitating the understanding of the Qur'an's meaning, evaluate the cognitive attainment level of students using Isham al-’Uwaid’s framework of the eight stages of Qur'an comprehension, measure the affective attainment level based on David R. Krathwohl’s affective domain theory at PP Jalaluddin Ar-Rumi Jember and PP Nurul Jadid Jalaluddin Ar-Rumi Region Probolinggo.
This study was designed using a descriptive-qualitative approach with a multi-site study design. The selection of the two pesantren was based on the similarity of their character-value-based tahfidz curriculum, despite differences in the students' socio-cultural backgrounds. Primary data were obtained through in-depth interviews. Participant observation was conducted intensively to monitor genuine patient, which was reinforced by documentary studies. The data analysis process utilized the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana through three simultaneous streams of activity: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification, followed by a cross-site analysis. The trustworthiness of the findings was tested through source triangulation, technical triangulation of data collection, and peer debriefing.
The results of the study revealed two main findings. First, in the cognitive comprehension analysis, if strictly measured using the eight stages of Qur'an comprehension according to Isham al-'Uwaid, the implementation at both sites has only consistently executed four stages, namely Collecting verses of the same theme, Identifying authentic narrations from Prophet Muhammad SAW, Mastering the Arabic language and its sciences, and Paying attention to the narrations and stories of the Imams with the Qur'an. This finding confirms Isham al-'Uwaid's view that to achieve a complete understanding in order to avoid the distortion of meaning, these eight stages must be executed integrally. Second, in the affective internalization analysis based on David R. Krathwohl's theory, the Valuing stage was the majority achievement at both sites. However, the Characterization stage (full internalization) remained highly limited.
This study successfully formulated a scientific novelty called the 3T+1M - Krathwohl Functional Alignment Model. This finding proves that the 3T+1M pedagogical cycle operates in parallel and systemically with the stages of human affective development, where Talaqqi supports the Receiving phase; Tafahhum serves as a critical bridge for the Responding and Valuing phases; Tikrar facilitates the formation of the Organization phase; and long-term independent Muraja'ah acts as the primary catalyst for the realization of Characterization by Value. Overall, the 3T+1M method is proven to be highly effective as an operational model for religious character building (patience), provided it is implemented holistically.
