Abstract
Qomariyah, Silviana (2022). An Analysis on Students’ Grammatical Error of Degree of Comparison Sentences at MTs Negeri 1 Probolinggo. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University, Paiton, Probolinggo.Advisor (I): Syaiful Islam, M.Pd.Advisor (II): Bradhiansyah Tri Suryanto, M.Pd.
Keywords: Grammatical Error, Degree of Comparison.
This research analyzes students’ grammatical errors, specifically in writing sentences involving adjectives in degrees of comparison. The primary objective was to identify the most common errors made by students in this specific grammatical area. Following the qualitative research framework outlined by Lexy J. Moleong, the researcher served as the main instrument, supported by observations, tests, and documentation to collect and assess the data.
The error analysis in this study was based on Dulay’s Surface Strategy Taxonomy, which classifies errors into four categories: omission, addition, misordering, and misformation. The population for this study consisted of students at MTs Negeri 1 Probolinggo, with a sample of 13 students from the 9th grade.
The findings reveal that the highest frequency of error was omission, with a total of 351 instances. This was followed by misordering (350 errors), addition (267 errors), and misformation (232 errors). The most prevalent specific error identified in the fill-in-the-blank test was the omission of prepositions. These results suggest that students' errors are largely driven by a fundamental misunderstanding of English grammatical structures in comparative contexts.
