Abstract
Rahman, Taufiqur (2022). Analysis of Linguistic Modality on Joe Biden’s Inauguration Speech. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University.Advisor (I): Durratul Hikmah, M.Pd.Advisor (II): Abdullah Al Anis, M.Pd.
Keywords: Linguistic Modality, Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), Joe Biden, Inauguration Speech.
This research analyzes the linguistic modality employed in President Joe Biden’s inauguration speech, delivered on January 20, 2021. The study identifies the types, degrees, and orientations of modality used by the 46th President of the United States. Adopting a descriptive qualitative method, the researcher utilized documentation techniques to collect data from the official transcript of the speech.
The analytical framework was based on M.A.K. Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The data consisted of clauses containing modal elements. The findings identified two primary types of modality: Modalization (comprising probability and usuality) and Modulation (comprising obligation and inclination), totaling 75 modalized clauses. Furthermore, the analysis categorized these modals by their value (high, median, and low) and their orientation (explicit subjective, explicit objective, implicit subjective, and implicit objective).
The results indicate that Biden predominantly used modalization-probability, suggesting that he aimed to offer various possibilities and visions for the country's future, helping the audience grasp his intended ideas. Additionally, the dominant orientation found was explicit subjective, indicating that the speaker presented his message in an optimistic and convincing manner, establishing his authority and stance as the newly inaugurated president.
