This research aims to identify the types of deixis (person, place, and time deixis) and describe their functional use within the utterances of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, The Remains of the Day. The study is designed to explore how deictic expressions contribute to linguistic coherence, specifically for instructional purposes in the English Department. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the data consists of deictic words, phrases, and sentences extracted from the novel.
Data collection was conducted through documentation techniques, while the analysis followed the interactive model of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. To ensure data credibility, the researcher employed source triangulation and peer debriefing with academic advisors.
The findings reveal that the most dominant form of deixis in the novel is person deixis, occurring 6,917 times. The author utilizes person deixis to address characters within the narrative, refer to entities outside the immediate context, and denote specific objects. Furthermore, time deixis is used to anchor the narrative to specific temporal points, while place deixis serves to establish spatial proximity or distance relative to the speaker. These results suggest that understanding deictic functions is crucial for students to master coherence in textual analysis and writing.
