Abstract
Widiasari, Firdausa. 2023. An Analysis of Students’ Grammatical Error Sources in Instagram Captions as Popular Culture. Undergraduate English Education Program, Faculty of Social and Humanities, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I) Durrotul Hikmah, M.Pd., Advisor (II) Syaiful Islam, M.Pd.
Keywords: Error Analysis, Instagram Caption, Sources of Error, Students' Grammar.
This study aimed to identify the types of grammatical errors in English captions posted by seventh-semester students on Instagram and to determine the sources of these errors. A descriptive qualitative method was employed in this research. The subjects consisted of ten seventh-semester students, with 14 posts identified as containing errors. The primary instrument of this research was the researcher herself, supported by observation and interviews as data collection techniques. The data were analyzed through four stages: identification, classification, explanation, and evaluation.
The findings reveal that the most frequent type of grammatical error in the students' Instagram captions was misformation (11 errors in 9 posts), followed by addition (7 errors in 5 posts), misordering (3 errors in 3 posts), and omission (2 errors in 2 posts).
Regarding the sources of these errors, six students attributed their mistakes to carelessness, while four students cited the use of Google Translate as the primary reason. The analysis indicates that the errors largely stem from intralingual factors, particularly carelessness in applying grammatical rules. Based on these results, it is suggested that future researchers explore this topic in greater detail to provide a more comprehensive reference for language learners and educators.
