Abstract

Sa’diyah, Halimatus. 2023. Discourse Analysis of Hegemony as Portrayed in Tere Liye’s Novel: Si Anak Pemberani. Thesis. English Education Department, Undergraduate Program, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I) Dr. Tirmidzi, M.Pd., Advisor (II) Bradhiansyah Tri Suryanto, M.Pd.

Keywords: Discourse Analysis, Novel, Hegemony.

Teaching English through literature, specifically novels, has proven to be an effective medium for increasing students' motivation. To fully comprehend and critically analyze the content of a novel, competence in discourse analysis is essential. This study aims to describe the discourse within Tere Liye’s novel, Si Anak Pemberani, by employing psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic approaches.

The results of the analysis demonstrate that corrupt government officials are depicted as the primary agents of power abuse and hegemony within the story. The discourse suggests that when such power imbalances occur, a central principle must be enforced: the necessity of resisting unjust authority. The novel presents an epic narrative centered on the resistance and struggles led by the "Empat Buntal" gang. Through this analysis, the study illustrates how hegemony is constructed and challenged within the literary work, reflecting broader social dynamics through a linguistic lens.
