Abstract

Rosyida, Asila Roiyatur. 2024. Students’ Perception on Obstacle Factors to English Learning at SMPN 1 Atap Kalianget. A Case Study Advisor.

The process of teaching English does not always run as the learners have wanted and the educators have expected, students’ opinions related with their experiences, knowledge, and perspectives are required to discover several possible factors becoming the obstacles of learning English. Thus, this research aims at discovering and investigating the obstacle factors to English learning at SMPN 1 Atas Kalianget, with the significance that the research will be able to solve the students’ obstacles in learning and maximize the students’ result of learning English.
The researcher employed the qualitative descriptive research method to conduct the research with the chosen variables. Purposive sampling was used to select several suitable subjects to obtain the required data. The research data was classified into both primary and secondary data, primary data is from the interview results and the secondary data is from the observation. Then, the collected data were further analyzed by the analysis model of Miles, Huberman and Saldana consisting of the activity of data condensation, data display, and verifying conclusion. Source triangulation was employed to gain the validity of research data.
In summary, at the end of the research, the research results conveyed that the obstacle factors to English learning at SMPN 1 Kalianget are classified into two types, the internal and external obstacles factors, internal obstacle factors in English language learning at SMPN 1 Atap Kalianget include: 1) personal interest of students to learn English, 2) perceived difficulties by students in English learning, and 3) background or foundational knowledge of students in learning, while, the external factors in English language learning at SMPN 1 Atap Kalianget cover; 1) teaching-learning method implemented by the English teachers in teaching English, 2) inadequate educational facilities to be used in learning English by the students, 3) lack of teaching staff involvement, and 4) lack of support from students’ parents and environment.
