Abstract

Nur Widad Wijaya. 2023. Analysis of EFL Students' Difficulties in Determining the Title of an English Thesis. Undergraduate Thesis, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I) Mohammad Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li., Advisor (II) Mochlis Ekowijayanto, M.Pd.

Keywords: EFL Students, Difficulties, Title Determination, English Thesis.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the challenges faced by EFL students in determining an appropriate title for their English undergraduate thesis. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative research design, data were collected and analyzed through observations and interviews. The findings reveal a complex array of difficulties encountered by students, which can be categorized into academic and technical factors. These include: (1) limited engagement with scientific journals, (2) difficulty in identifying specific topics and generating ideas, (3) psychological barriers such as feeling easily discouraged, (4) a lack of understanding regarding thesis writing systematics and research methodology, and (5) limited English proficiency. Additionally, students faced significant obstacles in accessing reference sources, including a lack of digital library access on campus and technical issues with devices. External factors such as a non-conducive environment, a lack of peer support, and difficulty in identifying new phenomena further hindered the process. Overall, the results indicate that determining the thesis title is perceived as the most challenging stage for students in completing their academic requirements.
