Teaching English through literature, particularly novels, has proven to be effective in increasing students' motivation to learn the language. To deeply understand and critically evaluate the content of a novel, the competence to conduct discourse analysis is essential. This study aims to describe the discourse presented in Tere Liye’s Si Anak Cahaya (The Child of Light) by employing both psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic approaches. The findings reveal that the novel portrays the multifaceted roles of Indonesian women during the early days of independence, including their roles as obedient children, intelligent and accomplished students, reliable friends, and community members who contribute significantly to society. In summary, the discourse within the novel underscores that women played a vital role in both domestic spheres and the broader social-public environment.
