Abstract

Masruroh, Zulfatul. 2024. The Needs and Difficulties of Essay Writing for EFL Students. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Program, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Durratul Hikmah, S.S., M.Pd.

Keywords: EFL Learners, Essay Writing, Needs Analysis.

Writing is widely recognized as a complex skill in English language acquisition, often presenting significant challenges for learners transitioning into higher education. This study investigates the specific difficulties encountered by EFL students in essay writing and explores their perceived learning needs to improve the quality of their English compositions. Adopting a qualitative research design, the study utilized an open-ended questionnaire as the primary instrument, involving 38 students from the English Education Department at Nurul Jadid University. The collected data were analyzed using a descriptive qualitative technique to identify recurring themes and instructional requirements.

The findings reveal that students face substantial difficulties across five key writing components: content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. Students indicated that their previous educational backgrounds often lacked intensive writing instruction, leading to a gap in their academic writing proficiency. To address these challenges, the analysis of student needs highlights a preference for diverse instructional supports, including the integration of visual aids (pictures and films), the use of writing templates, more effective pedagogical methods, and increased frequency of practice. This research provides valuable insights for lecturers and department heads to refine the writing curriculum and implement more targeted strategies that align with students' actual learning needs.
