Abstract
Octavia, Adinda Tri. 2025. The Influence of Language Culture in English Language Learning: A Qualitative Case Study on Challenges of Students in the English Education Program at University of Nurul Jadid. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Program, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Moh. Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li.
Keywords: Language Culture, English Language Learning, Students’ Challenges, Cultural Awareness.
This qualitative case study investigates the influence of language culture on English language acquisition and the specific challenges faced by students in the English Education Program at the University of Nurul Jadid. The study explores how students' cultural backgrounds shape their understanding, motivation, and learning strategies. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations, focusing on the lived experiences of students in navigating the intersection between their native culture and the target language culture.
The findings indicate that local cultural elements act as a "double-edged sword" in the learning process; while familiar cultural references can facilitate comprehension, significant disparities between students’ native culture and English-speaking cultures often create obstacles. These challenges are most prominent in the areas of sociolinguistic context, idiomatic expressions, and pronunciation. The study highlights that cultural awareness is a critical component of communicative competence. Furthermore, the results suggest that integrating local culture into the English curriculum can enhance instructional relevance and student engagement. The research emphasizes the necessity for culturally responsive teaching (CRT) approaches to address diverse learning preferences and challenges. Ultimately, this study contributes to a more inclusive and effective English language education by acknowledging the critical interplay between language and culture in the learning process.
