Abstract
Mubarok, Moch. Kavil. 2025. Syntactical Analysis in JKT48’s Flying High Song Lyrics. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Durratul Hikmah, M.Pd.
Keywords: Syntactical Structure, Functional Grammar, Song Lyrics, SFL.
Song lyrics serve as a rich medium for linguistic exploration, where structural form meets functional purpose. This study examines the syntactical structure and functional meaning within the lyrics of JKT48’s song, Flying High. The research utilizes Nelson Francis’s theory of sentence classification to analyze structure and Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach to uncover functional meaning. The objectives are to identify the dominant syntactic patterns and to investigate how meaning is functionally conveyed through the text.
This study employs a qualitative descriptive method with a focus on discourse and text analysis. Data were collected from official lyric documentation and analyzed through the lens of syntactic structures and SFL’s three metafunctions: ideational, interpersonal, and textual.
The findings reveal that the most dominant syntactic pattern in the lyrics is the Structure of Predication + Complementation + Modification, which facilitates clarity of meaning while aligning with the song's musical rhythm. From a functional perspective, the lyrics are characterized by material processes (ideational metafunction), indicating action and achievement. The interpersonal metafunction is dominated by declarative forms with strong modality, reflecting confidence. Meanwhile, the textual metafunction highlights personal themes that emphasize emotion and perspective. The study concludes that the integration of syntactic form and functional grammar in Flying High effectively communicates a motivational theme, proving that contemporary pop lyrics possess significant linguistic depth despite their apparent simplicity.
