Translation is a complex cognitive and linguistic process that requires more than mere word-for-word substitution. This study aims to analyze the difficulties encountered by seventh-semester English Education students at Nurul Jadid University in translating texts from Indonesian into English and to identify the underlying factors contributing to these challenges. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive design, data were gathered from 15 female students through written translation tests and semi-structured interviews.
The translation tasks were evaluated using an adapted error analysis framework to classify the types and frequencies of errors. The findings revealed five major categories of translation difficulties: lexical, grammatical, semantic/contextual, idiomatic/cultural, and structural/stylistic. Lexical and grammatical errors emerged as the most dominant, reflecting students’ limited vocabulary and struggles in applying syntactic rules within specific contexts. Observations also indicated a high prevalence of literal translation and an overreliance on machine translation tools, such as Google Translate.
The study uncovered several contributing factors to these difficulties, including limited English proficiency, a lack of awareness regarding translation strategies, insufficient exposure to authentic English input, and inadequate instructional support. The research concludes that translation competence is shaped by a complex interplay of linguistic, cognitive, and cultural factors. It recommends the integration of strategy-based instruction and a more comprehensive translation curriculum to enhance students' performance and shift their approach from literal to dynamic equivalence.
