As one component in the learning process, the teacher has a position that determines the success of learning, because the teacher's main function is to design, manage, and evaluate learning. The teacher is in charge of transferring a set of organized knowledge so that knowledge becomes part of the student's knowledge system. One of competencies that must be owned by teacher is pedagogical competence. Pedagogical competence is the ability in the management of students that includes an understanding of the student, designing and conducting learning, evaluation of learning outcomes, and the development of student to actualize various potentials. Based on the explanation above, the research focus in this study is about the pedagogic competence of English teachers in understanding student characteristics. The researcher conducted research at MTs Mambaul Ulum, Sukodadi, Paiton. The participants were two english teachers of the school. The research method used in this research is qualitative study which employs an narative inquary. The research instrument in this study is human instrument. In collecting the data, the method used in this research are interview, field note, observative checklist. The data analysis in this study is qualitative data analysis by Huberman and Miles. The result shows that teachers understand the character of students in different ways, some are using a psychological approach and some are by looking at student learning outcomes. And the teacher has carried out learning with several theories and educational principles that are in accordance with the character of students and the curriculum at school. The teacher also provides educational learning activities by explaining material and examples that are easily understood and practiced by students. To develop the potential of students, the teacher invites students to support and carry out several activities, so that students become active in learning. And the teacher has also communicated well and the language is easy to understand, which is not using full English, as well as being a listener to students. Regarding assessment and evaluation, the teacher assesses students from three aspects, namely cognitive, effective, and psychomotor. And the teacher gives questions to students either individually or in groups and remedial for students whose grades are not good or below the KKM.
