Learning vocabulary is important in English. It is important because vocabulary is the fundamental element of four skills in English. In fact, learning English is not easy. From the result of preliminary of this research, it was found that the students’ vocabulary was still very low. Therefore, the aim of this research was to investigate the effectiveness of Short Story in improving students’ vocabulary because from the previous research showed that the use of short story could improve students’ vocabulary. The approach of this research was quantitative research which pre-experimental design by using pre-test and post-test. Subject of this research was eighth grade students of MTs. Raudhatus Shalihin consist of 26 students. The instrument for collecting the data was vocabulary test. The data about students’ progress in vocabulary were taken from vocabulary test (post-test). Therefore the short story was successfully makes students more interesting and enjoyable during learning process. Students were more active and enthusiastic to get new vocabulary from the short story. It can be proven from the students mean score in post-test (78,08) higher than pre-test (37,08) and T-test value was greater that T-table value (21,526>2,059). In addition, the Null Hypothesis (H0) was rejected and Alternative Hypothesis (H1) was accepted.
