Abstract

Putri, Alfina Ananda (2023). Semantic Analysis on the Lyrics of Taylor Swift’s Songs. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University.Advisor (I): Mohammad Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li.Advisor (II): Mochlis Ekowijayanto, M.Pd.

Keywords: Semantics, Metaphor Types, Semantic Quality, Taylor Swift.

This research provides a semantic analysis of metaphors used in selected songs from Taylor Swift’s tenth studio album, Midnights. The songs analyzed include “Anti-Hero,” “Lavender Haze,” and “Snow on the Beach.” The objectives of this study were to identify the types of metaphors used, determine the most dominant type, and analyze the impact of these metaphors on the semantic quality of the lyrics.

The study employed a descriptive qualitative method with document analysis as the data collection technique. Drawing on Ullmann’s (2014) theory, the researcher identified 30 instances of metaphors across the selected lyrics. The findings revealed three types of metaphors: Anthropomorphic Metaphor (5 data), Concrete to Abstract Metaphor (17 data), and Synesthetic Metaphor (8 data). No instances of Animal Metaphors were found in the analyzed tracks. The most dominant type was the Concrete to Abstract Metaphor, appearing in 17 instances.

In terms of semantic quality, the analysis showed that carelessness (characterized by open-ended interpretations and lack of conventional linguistic constraints) was the most frequent indicator with 11 data points. Other indicators found included readability (9 data), linguistic indicators (4 data), domain language (4 data), and consistent language (2 data). The study concludes that the prevalence of metaphors—particularly concrete-to-abstract—enhances the lyrical depth while allowing for a "carelessness" in structure that invites open-ended interpretation, making the lyrics both evocative and accessible to the listeners.
