Abstract

Afifah, Dzurratul Afra. 2023. An Analysis of Code-Mixing in Gita Savitri’s YouTube Video Entitled “Childfree”. Thesis. Undergraduate Program, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I) Mohammad Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li., Advisor (II) Mochlis Ekowijayanto, M.Pd.

Keywords: Sociolinguistics, YouTube, Code-Mixing.

Sociolinguistics is the study of the relationship between language and society. Every society employs different linguistic styles when interacting, and these variations often lead individuals to mix languages within their speech—a phenomenon known as code-mixing. As the use of code-mixing has become increasingly common in digital media, this research focuses on the code-mixing utilized by YouTuber Gita Savitri.

The purpose of this research is to identify the types of code-mixing that appear in Gita Savitri’s YouTube video entitled "Childfree." This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, with the researcher serving as the primary instrument. Data were collected using the documentation method and analyzed through content analysis. The framework for identifying code-mixing types is based on Muysken’s theory, while the analysis is further supported by Hoffman’s theory.

The results reveal a significant presence of code-mixing in the "Childfree" episode, consisting of 39 instances of insertion, 59 instances of alternation, and 25 instances of congruent lexicalization. Additionally, the study identified 60 cases of intra-lexical code-mixing and 73 cases of intra-sentential code-mixing. These findings illustrate the complex linguistic patterns used by digital content creators in modern discourse.
