Abstract
Holilah. 2023. Strategies for Learning Speaking Skills of a Science Program Student. Thesis. English Education Program, Faculty of Social and Humanities, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I) Bradhiansyah Tri Suryanto, M.Pd., Advisor (II) Abdullah Al Anis, M.Pd.
Keywords: Learning Strategies, Speaking Skills, Narrative Inquiry.
The purpose of this study was to identify the language learning strategies used by a science program student to improve her speaking skills and to describe how these strategies were applied in her learning process. This research employed a qualitative method with a narrative inquiry approach, allowing the researcher to explore and retell the respondent's personal experiences in learning English speaking without altering the core essence of her story. The primary data collection instrument used was an in-depth interview.
Based on the research findings, it was found that the participant utilized five types of learning strategies: memory, cognitive, compensation, social, and affective strategies. Among these, memory and cognitive strategies were identified as the most frequently used methods to enhance speaking ability. The implementation of direct strategies included creating mental linkages, utilizing images and sounds, and employing actions as part of the memory strategy, while cognitive strategies were implemented through consistent practice, analyzing, reasoning, and creating structures for input and output. Additionally, compensation strategies were used through intelligent guessing and overcoming linguistic limitations. Regarding indirect strategies, the participant employed affective strategies by encouraging herself and monitoring her emotional state, alongside social strategies which were implemented by asking questions and cooperating with others. This study is expected to provide valuable insights and benefits for readers, particularly those interested in language learning strategies for students in different academic programs.
