Abstract

This research aimed to describes the implementation of Native Day for students’ speaking skill development at Foreign Language Development Institution (FLDI) of Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School. This research used a qualitative approach with case study research. The participants were six members of NATO (students’ organization of FLDI). The instruments used were observation and in-depth interviews to collecting the data. The data analysis technique was carried out by Miles and Huberman’s theory through data collection, data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing or verification of research result.
Findings indicated that Native Day at every Tuesday forces students to speak like real English natives through various activities as Reading Day, News Presentation, Listening to the Conversation, Delivering the Opinion and Guidance. The results of interviews with NATO indicated that routine evaluations and strict rule enforcement foster a disciplined learning environment, leading to developed student confidence and competence in speaking English, as well as active participation in competitions. Observation confirmed that Native Day creates conducive environment for students’ speaking skill development stage by stage.
According to behaviorism theory found by Pavlov and B.F. Skinner, Native Day successes the implementing habituality and giving effective consequence for motivating students’ in speaking English. In short, Native Day in FLDI significantly contributes to students’ speaking skill development.
