Abstract

Syarofah, Alfiatus. 2024. Willingness of English Language Education Students to Communicate in English. Undergraduate program Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Bradhiansyah Tri Sryanto, M.Pd.

Keywords: Willingness to Communicate, Communicate in English, English Education Students

The study addresses the issue of English Language Education students' reluctance to communicate in English, particularly among fifth-semester students at Nurul Jadid University. Despite being English majors, many students struggle with speaking English confidently due to factors such as self-confidence, learning anxiety, and the overall classroom environment. These barriers hinder their ability to effectively communicate in English, which is crucial for their academic and professional development.
The primary objectives of this research are to investigate the general characteristic of Willingness to Communicate (WTC) in English among these students, identify the factors that influence their WTC, and explore strategies to enhance their motivation to speak English. The study aims to provide insights to help educators design better learning environments and teaching methods, encouraging students to participate actively in English communication.
This research employed a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing interviews and surveys to gather data from the participants. The findings indicate that self-confidence, anxiety, classroom atmosphere, and teacher support influence students' WTC. The results suggest that creating a supportive and engaging learning environment significantly improves students' willingness to communicate in English, enhancing their speaking skills and language proficiency.
