Abstract
Ferdiansyah, M. Althof. 2023. The Use of Audio Visual to Improve English Speaking Skill for The Eighth Grade Students of MTs Manbaul Hikam. Undergraduate Program, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I) Moclish Ekowijayanto, M.Pd., (II) Durratul Hikmah, M.Pd.
Keywords: Audio Visual, Speaking Skill.
This study aims to improve the speaking skills of eighth-grade students at MTs Manbaul Hikam through the use of audio-visual media. The research followed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design consisting of two cycles, with each cycle comprising two meetings. Working collaboratively with the English teacher and students, the researcher collected both qualitative and quantitative data. Quantitative data were derived from tests in Cycle I and Cycle II, while qualitative data were gathered through observations, interviews with the teacher and students of class VIII-A, and field discussions. These findings were documented via field notes, interview transcripts, and photographs. The results indicate a significant improvement in students' speaking proficiency. The audio-visual tools employed, specifically YouTube-sourced dialogue videos and slides, successfully captured students' attention and enhanced their learning motivation. By observing authentic English-language models, students gained a better understanding of language use in real-life contexts. Improvements were noted across several aspects of speaking, particularly in fluency and comprehensibility. Furthermore, students demonstrated increased confidence, participated more actively, and were more willing to seek clarification when facing difficulties. This progress is reflected in the quantitative findings, where the average speaking score rose from 57.78 in Cycle I to 72.67 in Cycle II. In conclusion, the use of audio-visual media is an effective strategy for improving the speaking skills of eighth-grade students at MTs Manbaul Hikam. It is recommended that English teachers utilize this medium to foster better speaking outcomes in the classroom.
