Abstract
Ulfa, Siti Fadilah. 2023. Students’ Perspective on the Use of TikTok in Learning Grammar. Undergraduate Program, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I) Durratul Hikmah, M.Pd., Advisor (II) Syaiful Islam, M.Pd.
Keywords: Learning Grammar, Perspective, TikTok Application.
This study aims to investigate students' perspectives on learning grammar through the TikTok application. The researcher employed a qualitative descriptive approach, collecting data through observations and interviews using open-ended questions adapted from previous studies. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman Flow Model, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification. The participants of this study were seven students from the elementary class at the Darul Hikmah dormitory. The findings are categorized based on the three perception indicators proposed by Walgito (2010).
The results indicate that students hold both positive and negative perceptions regarding the use of TikTok for grammar learning, influenced by internal and external factors. Regarding external factors, negative perceptions arose when students felt that video explanations lacked sufficient detail. Conversely, positive perceptions were fostered when students found the medium fun and engaging, which increased their enthusiasm for learning. Internally, students who felt happy and excited developed positive perspectives, while those who perceived their own understanding of the material as low tended to view TikTok negatively as a learning tool. A primary weakness identified in the study was the lack of detailed explanations in the recommended learning videos. Therefore, it is suggested that teachers create more comprehensive grammar content tailored to specific lesson materials. Future researchers are encouraged to explore theories that further define the formation of student perceptions to provide deeper and more significant insights into TikTok's role in English language education.
