Abstract

Maghfiroturizkia, Fira. 2024. Teacher’s Strategy in Teaching English for Students with Hearing Impairment: A Teacher’s Story in a Special School. Undergraduate Program, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Durratul Hikmah, M.Pd.

Keywords: Learning English, Hearing Impairment, Teaching Strategy, Teacher’s Perspective.

Teaching students with hearing impairment requires a specialized approach and distinct strategies to facilitate effective communication and learning. This study explores the implementation of the Total Physical Response (TPR) method as a viable strategy for teaching English in this unique context. The purpose of this research was to investigate the teacher's perspective and lived experiences in utilizing TPR for students with hearing impairment at SLB Dharma Wanita Situbondo. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the researcher gathered in-depth insights through observation and interviews. The collected data were subsequently analyzed to understand the nuances of the teacher's instructional process. The results indicate that the teacher utilized the TPR method optimally, which fostered high student engagement and created a joyful learning atmosphere. Furthermore, the findings reveal that English instruction for hearing-impaired students at this institution primarily focuses on the development of writing skills. In conclusion, the Total Physical Response method is an effective and engaging strategy for teaching English to students with hearing impairment, particularly in enhancing their interest in the subject.
