Abstract

Mukarromah Azay, Helmiyatul. 2024. The Beliefs of English Education Department Students as Pre-Service Teachers on English as an International Language (EIL). Undergraduate Program, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Bradhiansyah Tri Suryanto, M.Pd.

Keywords: Beliefs, Pre-Service Teachers, English as an International Language (EIL).

The beliefs held by pre-service teachers regarding English as an International Language (EIL) significantly influence their pedagogical perspectives and future teaching practices. This study aims to examine the construction of beliefs among English Education Department students at Nurul Jadid University concerning the role of English in a global context. Adopting a qualitative approach with a narrative inquiry design, the researcher explored the participants' lived experiences. Seven students from the English Education Department participated in the study, and data were gathered through in-depth interviews. The collected narratives were then analyzed to identify key themes in the formation of their professional beliefs.

The findings reveal that the participants' beliefs are deeply rooted in their educational backgrounds, personal experiences, and cultural contexts. These factors collectively shape their attitudes toward EIL, their motivation to learn the language, and their confidence in speaking English. This study underscores the importance of understanding such beliefs, as they serve as a foundation for future teaching attitudes. Based on these results, it is recommended that the study program implement policies encouraging consistent English communication in the classroom to build students' confidence. Furthermore, students are encouraged to seek practical experiences, such as private tutoring or mentoring, to reinforce their skills. For future research, it is suggested to broaden the scope by involving students from different semesters or utilizing diverse research methods.
