Abstract

Nurjannah, Ike. 2024. Teachers’ Challenges in Teaching English for EFL Learners at Pesantren. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Program, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Bradhiansyah Tri Suryanto, M.Pd.

Keywords: EFL Learners, Teacher Challenges, Teaching English, Islamic Boarding School.

This qualitative case study aimed to investigate the multifaceted challenges faced by English teachers at Senior High School Nurul Jadid within a pesantren (Islamic boarding school) context. The study involved four English teachers (three males and one female) as the primary participants. Data were collected through observations and semi-structured interviews, subsequently analyzed using the thematic analysis framework proposed by Miles and Huberman. The findings revealed five major categories of challenges encountered in English language instruction: (1) overcrowded classrooms, (2) low student motivation, (3) difficulties in enhancing students' language competence, (4) limited mastery of diverse teaching methodologies, and (5) students' diverse cultural backgrounds. These results highlight the complex nature of English language teaching in a traditional religious educational setting. This study contributes to the broader understanding of the unique pedagogical hurdles faced by teachers in similar environments and provides a foundation for future strategies aimed at enhancing the quality of English instruction in pesantren-based schools.
