Abstract

Rizaldi, Moh. Maulana. 2024. The Discourse of Racism and Discrimination in the Indonesian Society Context Portrayed in Tere Liye’s ‘Si Anak Pelangi’. Undergraduate Program, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Dr. Tirmidi, M.Pd.

Keywords: Discourse Analysis, Novel, Racism and Discrimination.

This study examines the discourse of racism and discrimination within the context of Indonesian society as portrayed in Tere Liye's novel, Si Anak Pelangi. Employing a psycholinguistic approach, the research explores how these themes are constructed and interpreted within the narrative. The story, centered on a young girl named Rasuna, highlights various forms of discrimination experienced by a diverse cast of characters representing different ethnic, religious, cultural, and economic backgrounds. This research aims to describe the novel's story grammar, analyze specific instances of racism and discrimination, and relate these findings to the broader social landscape in Indonesia. Methodologically, the study utilizes suprasegmental and intertextual analyses to investigate the cognitive structures underlying the narrative. The findings emphasize that literature serves as a reflection of societal tensions, where discrimination often stems from cognitive biases and social stratification. The significance of this study lies in its theoretical contribution to literary discourse on racism and its practical implications for fostering tolerance in multicultural societies. Despite limitations such as the focus on a single primary source, this research offers critical insights into the representation of social injustice in contemporary Indonesian literature.
