Abstract

Dinanti, Ayu N. 2024. Teachers’ Approaches in Handling Students’ Writing Errors. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Program, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Durratul Hikmah, M.Pd.

Keywords: Teacher Approaches, Error Correction, Writing Errors.

This study investigates the types of writing errors most frequently found in students' work and the specific approaches employed by teachers to address these errors. Adopting a descriptive qualitative design, the research analyzed the writing assignments of 28 ninth-grade students. Data were gathered through a triangulation of instruments, including observation, semi-structured interviews, and document reviews of students' written work. The collected data were analyzed to identify patterns of errors and the pedagogical responses used by educators.

The findings reveal that the most common types of errors made by students fall into the categories of omission, addition, and misformation. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that the corrective feedback method utilized by teachers is highly effective, not only in correcting technical mistakes but also in fostering students' interest and engagement in the writing process. This study provides valuable insights for educators to develop more efficient strategies for error treatment. Ultimately, the implementation of appropriate corrective approaches is expected to enhance both student learning outcomes and the overall quality of English language instruction.
