Abstract

Afifah, Rif’atul. 2024. Analysis of Semantic Roles on Jakpostimages Instagram Updates. Undergraduate Program, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Moh. Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li.

Keywords: Semantics, Semantic Roles, Jakpostimages, Instagram Updates.

This research investigates the types of semantic roles utilized in the news captions of the Jakpostimages Instagram account. Employing a qualitative content analysis design, the study focuses on how meaning is structured through thematic roles in social media journalism. The primary data were extracted from text captions of sixteen news images posted in the March 2024 edition. Data collection was conducted through documentation, while the analysis followed the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.

The findings identified a total of 51 instances of semantic roles within the selected samples. Based on Saeed’s theory, the analysis revealed the presence of eight distinct roles: Agent, Patient, Theme, Experiencer, Beneficiary, Instrument, Location, and Goal. Notably, the study found that Theme was the most frequently occurring semantic role, whereas the role of Source was entirely absent from the data set. These results indicate that Jakpostimages primarily focuses on the "entity undergoing a change" or "location" in its news delivery to provide clear and concise information to its digital audience. This study provides valuable insights into the application of semantics in social media discourse and contributes to the pedagogical development of English linguistics.
