Abstract

Daroin, Sa’adatut. 2024. Lack of Mastery in Speaking English: Teachers’ Challenges in Teaching English at the Junior High School Level. Undergraduate Program, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Durratul Hikmah, S.S., M.Pd.

Keywords: Pedagogical Challenges, English Mastery, Speaking Skills.

English language instruction in Indonesia frequently encounters various obstacles that hinder both students and teachers from achieving communicative fluency. Even within specialized environments like the Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School, teachers may face personal limitations in language mastery that affect their instructional effectiveness. This study aims to investigate the specific challenges faced by English teachers in teaching speaking skills and the strategies they employ to overcome these hurdles.

Adopting a qualitative research design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations involving English teachers at the junior high school level. The data were then analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques to identify recurring themes and patterns. The findings reveal that achieving fluency remains a significant challenge for the teachers themselves. Specifically, their difficulties stem from a lack of self-confidence, inaccurate pronunciation, limited vocabulary acquisition, and insufficient grammar mastery. To mitigate these challenges, the teachers implement several self-improvement and instructional strategies, including intensive vocabulary building, the utilization of multimedia learning tools, the integration of creative educational games, consistent self-training, and the "mirror talk" technique to enhance speaking confidence. This study highlights the necessity for continuous professional development to improve the linguistic competence of English educators.
