Abstract
Arifin, Sulton. 2023. Investigating The Inhibiting Factors In Speaking English Faced By English Education Students At Nurul Jadid University. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Mochlis Ekowijayanto, M.Pd.
Keywords: Inhibiting Factors, Speaking Ability, English Education.
This research aims to identify the barriers to English speaking proficiency among eighth-semester students of the English Education Department at Nurul Jadid University. The study was prompted by the observation that many students exhibited minimal involvement in oral activities despite being in their final year of study. Utilizing a qualitative approach, data were gathered through in-depth interviews to gain firsthand insights into the subjects' experiences and the underlying causes of their communicative inhibition.
The findings indicate that students' speaking progress is significantly hindered by both linguistic and psychological factors, including excessive attention to grammatical structures, lack of fluency, limited vocabulary, and high levels of anxiety. The analysis revealed three primary conclusions: first, a lack of regular practice remains a major obstacle to skill mastery. Second, the instructional methods employed—specifically a reliance on lecture-based teaching and reading from prepared materials—often result in student disengagement during speaking sessions. Third, the study highlights that a supportive learning environment is crucial; when instructors provide ample opportunities for practice without the fear of immediate correction or judgment, students show significant improvement in their speaking confidence and ability. This study suggests that diversifying teaching methods and fostering a low-anxiety classroom atmosphere are essential for overcoming student inhibition.
