Abstract
Hidayatullah, Syawqiy. 2024. Self-Directed Learning Strategy of English Speaking in Narrative Inquiry. Undergraduate Program, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Mochlis Ekowijayanto, M.Pd.
Keywords: Self-Directed Learning, English Speaking, Narrative Inquiry.
This study explores the transformative experience of autonomous English language acquisition and the personal growth associated with independent learning. Utilizing a narrative inquiry design, the researcher recounts his personal journey toward achieving proficiency in English speaking. The path was initially ignited by curiosity sparked by Hollywood cinema, which subsequently evolved into a structured, self-directed learning process. This journey involved proactive measures, such as volunteering for public speaking engagements and consistent participation in weekly oral activities. The primary data for this study consist of the researcher's personal reflections and experiences, documented through a series of narrative diaries.
The findings underscore the significance of self-directed learning (SDL) components—including initiative, goal setting, creativity, motivation, and persistence—in overcoming language barriers. Through continuous reflection, the researcher not only achieved substantial improvements in English fluency but also developed psychological resilience and a deeper understanding of effective pedagogical methods. This study concludes that self-directed learning is a powerful tool for language acquisition that fosters transferable skills applicable beyond the linguistic domain. These insights contribute to a broader understanding of how learners can navigate their own educational paths in various multicultural and autonomous learning contexts.
