Abstract

Mahmuda, Syimatul. 2024. A Narrative Inquiry Into EFL Students’ International Teaching Practicum in Malaysia and Thailand. Undergraduate Program, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Mochlis Ekowijayanto, M.Pd.

Keywords: EFL Student, Narrative Inquiry, International Teaching Practicum (ITP).

In Southeast Asian countries, particularly Indonesia, the implementation of international teaching practicums has gained significant popularity within university-based English departments. These programs offer students opportunities for cross-cultural exposure and aim to prepare them professionally before entering the teaching profession. This research focuses on two pre-service teachers who opted for an international teaching practicum (ITP) in Malaysia and Thailand rather than a local practicum in Indonesia. The primary objective of this study is to explore the lived experiences of these ITP participants, specifically focusing on the challenges they encountered and the strategies they employed while teaching English abroad.

This study adopted a qualitative approach using narrative inquiry. Data were collected through multiple in-depth interviews with two participants: one student from UNISMA who completed their practicum in Malaysia and one student from UNARS who participated in Thailand. The data were then analyzed using thematic analysis. The research findings reveal that the international teaching practicum provided transformative experiences, exposing pre-service teachers to significant cultural and academic challenges. To navigate these obstacles, the participants utilized several key strategies, including proactive cultural adaptation, leveraging the role of mentors, and focusing on independent professional development. These findings highlight the importance of cross-border teaching experiences in fostering resilience and global competence among future educators.
