Abstract

Hasanah, Ulfiatun. 2024. The Use of YouTube as Teaching Media in Learning English: Teacher's Perspectives. Undergraduate Program, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Mochlis Ekowijayanto, M.Pd.

Keywords: Teaching Media, Teacher’s Perspectives, YouTube.

This study investigates English teachers' perspectives on the integration of YouTube as a pedagogical tool in English language instruction, focusing on its perceived benefits and the challenges encountered during teaching practices. The research is driven by the increasing significance of digital media in education, particularly YouTube's ability to provide a vast array of authentic linguistic materials. Adopting a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with two experienced English teachers to capture their professional insights and classroom experiences.

The findings reveal that YouTube significantly enhances student engagement, improves listening and speaking skills, and offers unprecedented access to authentic language content. The primary benefits identified include YouTube's capacity to stimulate student interest through interactive and visually appealing content, which fosters a more dynamic learning atmosphere compared to traditional methods. However, the study also identifies several critical challenges, namely inconsistent internet connectivity, the complexity of appropriate content selection, and varying levels of digital literacy among students. These results emphasize the necessity for providing teachers with adequate training and technological resources to utilize YouTube effectively. The study concludes that while YouTube is a powerful asset for English language acquisition, its success depends on the teacher's ability to curate content and manage the digital learning environment to achieve optimal educational outcomes.
