Abstract

Wulandari, Umiati. 2024. Exploring Students’ Self-Efficacy in Speaking Performance: A Case Study in Indonesian EFL Context. Undergraduate Program, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Syaiful Islam, M.Pd.

Keywords: Self-Efficacy, Speaking Performance, EFL Context.

Self-efficacy refers to an individual's perceived ability to successfully perform a task and has a significant impact on academic achievement, particularly in English-speaking performance. This study aims to explore the factors influencing students' self-efficacy in speaking and to identify its impact on their overall performance. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, the research focused on four students from an English class at MTsN 1 Probolinggo during the 2023/2024 academic year. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations, which were subsequently analyzed using the thematic analysis technique.

The results revealed seven critical factors that influence students' self-efficacy in speaking: prior experience (mastery), indirect learning experience (vicarious), verbal persuasion, emotional conditioning, preparation effort, intrinsic motivation, and familiarity with the audience. Furthermore, five significant impacts of high self-efficacy on speaking performance were identified: increased self-confidence, enhanced fluency, effective anxiety management, reduction in self-doubt, and an increased willingness to take risks and face linguistic challenges. The findings suggest that fostering positive self-efficacy is essential for improving communicative competence among EFL learners.
