Abstract

Qotrunnada, Wilda. 2024. Grammatical Error Analysis on Senior High School Students’ Narrative Text Writing. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Program, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Durratul Hikmah, M.Pd.

Keywords: Grammatical Errors, Error Analysis, Narrative Text.

This study aims to analyze the grammatical errors made by eleventh-grade students (XI IBB 2) at SMA Nurul Jadid in writing narrative texts and to identify the factors contributing to these errors. Utilizing a qualitative case study design, the research involved 20 students as the primary subjects. Data were collected through observations and semi-structured interviews to gain a comprehensive understanding of the students' writing processes and challenges.

The findings revealed that students' errors primarily fall into the categories of Omission, Addition, and Misformation. Specific grammatical inaccuracies identified include the omission of the "-ed" suffix in past forms, omission of articles (a, an, the), omission of auxiliary verbs (is, am, are), and omission of the "-ing" suffix. Additionally, students frequently struggled with the addition of unnecessary prepositions and misformation in the selection of irregular past verbs and "to be" forms (was/were). The analysis concludes that these errors are predominantly caused by a lack of fundamental grammatical knowledge, low motivation in completing writing assignments, and significant time constraints during the writing process. This study suggests that targeted remedial grammar instruction is necessary to improve students' accuracy in narrative writing.
