Abstract
Ningsih, Yeni Sintiawati. 2024. An Analysis of Students’ Speaking Anxiety in Proposal Seminar Sessions: A Case Study of English Language Learners. Undergraduate Program, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Syaiful Islam, M.Pd.
Keywords: Speaking Anxiety, Proposal Seminar, English Language Learners.
The proposal seminar is a critical academic milestone that often triggers significant communication apprehension among students. This study aims to investigate the factors contributing to speaking anxiety during proposal seminar sessions and to identify the most dominant factors among seventh-semester English Education students at Nurul Jadid University. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research involved five students from the 2020 batch as primary participants. Data were gathered through direct observations and semi-structured interviews to gain a comprehensive understanding of the students' psychological and linguistic challenges.
The findings reveal that speaking anxiety in this high-stakes academic context is driven by several interrelated factors. Specifically, the data indicates that poor pronunciation is the most pervasive issue, affecting all five participants (100%), followed by a lack of vocabulary, which was a significant concern for two participants. These linguistic limitations, combined with the formal nature of the seminar, intensified the students' nervousness. Additionally, the results from both observations and interviews underscore the vital importance of thorough academic and mental preparation. The study concludes that students who lack systematic preparation are more susceptible to debilitating anxiety, thereby suggesting that intensive speaking drills and mock seminar sessions are essential to mitigate anxiety and improve performance in academic presentations.
