Abstract
Mulyati, Yuli. 2024. EFL Students’ Challenges of Quillbot Utilization in Academic Writing Class. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Program, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Syaiful Islam, M.Pd.
Keywords: EFL Students’ Challenges, Quillbot, AI in Education, Academic Writing.
Academic Writing courses require students to master specific genres, such as research papers, essays, and critical reviews. In recent years, the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like Quillbot has become prevalent among students to assist in paraphrasing, grammar improvement, and plagiarism avoidance. However, as a technological product, the effectiveness of Quillbot is not always guaranteed, presenting unique challenges for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. This study aims to investigate the challenges faced by eighth-semester English Education students at Nurul Jadid University when utilizing Quillbot and the solutions they employ to overcome these obstacles.
This research adopted a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five students and analyzed using the thematic analysis method by Braun and Clarke. The findings identified five primary challenges in Quillbot utilization: (1) generation of incomprehensible sentences, (2) difficulty in maintaining the original meaning of the text, (3) inadequate platform features in the free version, (4) limited accessibility, and (5) a perceived negative impact on students' independent writing skills. To mitigate these issues, students implemented two main solutions: performing manual paraphrasing to ensure contextual accuracy and utilizing alternative AI paraphrasing tools as a secondary comparison. The study concludes that while AI tools offer significant assistance, human oversight and critical thinking remain essential in academic writing to preserve the integrity and clarity of the work.
