Abstract

Rosyida, Asila Roiyatur. 2024. Students’ Perception of Obstacle Factors in English Learning at SMPN 1 Atap Kalianget: A Case Study. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: [Nama Pembimbing Lengkap].

Keywords: Students’ Perception, Obstacle Factors, English Learning.

The process of English language instruction often encounters discrepancies between learners' expectations and educational outcomes. Understanding students' perspectives based on their experiences and knowledge is essential to identify the barriers to effective learning. This research aims to investigate the specific obstacle factors hindering English learning at SMPN 1 Atap Kalianget, with the goal of providing solutions to optimize students' learning achievements.

This study employed a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach. Purposive sampling was used to select appropriate subjects for data collection. Primary data were obtained through semi-structured interviews, while secondary data were gathered via classroom observations. The data were analyzed using the interactive model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, which includes data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. Source triangulation was implemented to ensure the validity and reliability of the research findings.

The results categorize the obstacles to English learning into two primary types: internal and external factors. Internal obstacles include (1) a lack of personal interest in English, (2) perceived linguistic difficulties, and (3) insufficient foundational knowledge. Meanwhile, external obstacles encompass (1) monotonous or ineffective teaching methods, (2) inadequate educational facilities, (3) limited involvement from teaching staff, and (4) a lack of support from parents and the social environment. These findings highlight the need for a collaborative effort between teachers, the school, and parents to create a more supportive and well-equipped learning atmosphere.
