Abstract

Rahman, Ain Safrina. 2025. Beyond the Classroom: Exploring English Fluency among Students in an Islamic Dormitory. Undergraduate Program, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Moh. Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li.

Keywords: English Fluency, Islamic Dormitory, Out-of-class Learning, Informal Strategies.

This study investigates the informal strategies and linguistic practices employed by students in an Islamic dormitory to enhance their English fluency outside of formal classroom settings. Adopting a qualitative case study design, the research focused on five 11th-grade students residing in the dormitory. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, direct observations of student interactions, and detailed field notes. To ensure data validity, observation checklists were utilized. The data analysis followed the interactive model, including data condensation, structured data presentation, and conclusion drawing to uncover the qualitative significance of the findings.

The results demonstrate that English proficiency among students varies from beginner to advanced levels, largely influenced by the supportive dormitory environment which fosters language fluency. The study reveals that the acceleration of practical English mastery beyond the classroom depends heavily on social interactions facilitated by tutors and senior peers. Furthermore, the availability of dormitory facilities and a conducive social atmosphere are identified as critical factors in improving students' communicative competence. Based on these conclusions, the study recommends the development of a structured mentoring program led by experienced seniors and the enhancement of learning facilities, such as comfortable discussion areas and integrated audio-visual devices, to further increase the effectiveness of language acquisition in a residential setting.
