Abstract

Ulvia, Anisa Luluk. 2025. The Impact of ChatGPT on Student Learning Strategies and Critical Thinking Development. Undergraduate Program, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Mochlis Ekowijayanto, M.Pd.

Keywords: ChatGPT, Critical Thinking, Personalized Learning, AI in Education.

The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, such as ChatGPT, into the educational landscape has sparked significant debate regarding its potential to influence students' cognitive development. This study aims to examine whether ChatGPT facilitates or hinders the development of critical thinking through adaptive and individualized learning interactions. Employing a qualitative research design, data were collected through in-depth interviews and direct observations involving both students and lecturers at Nurul Jadid University. The analysis focuses on how AI-driven interactions reshape students' analytical approaches and independent reasoning.

The findings indicate that ChatGPT possesses the capacity to enhance classroom discussions, encourage students to consider multiple perspectives, and refine their analytical skills by providing immediate, diverse information. However, the study also identifies critical challenges that must be addressed, including an over-reliance on AI, the presence of algorithmic information bias, and a potential decrease in independent reasoning. The results suggest that while ChatGPT offers significant benefits in fostering student engagement and analytical reasoning, its effective integration requires deliberate pedagogical strategies. This study contributes to the field of educational technology by providing insights into AI-assisted learning and proposing guidelines to maximize AI’s educational potential while mitigating its cognitive drawbacks.
