Abstract

Oktavia, Ayu Linda. 2025. Balancing Roles and Responsibilities: A Study on Challenges and Strategies of Female English Teachers. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Durratul Hikmah, M.Pd.

Keywords: Female English Teachers, Dual Role, Challenges, Coping Strategies.

This study investigates the multifaceted challenges and strategies employed by female English teachers in East Java, Indonesia, in navigating the intersection between their professional roles as educators and their personal domestic responsibilities. Within a cultural landscape still influenced by patriarchal values, female teachers often encounter complex dual demands that may lead to role conflict, occupational stress, and emotional exhaustion. Utilizing a phenomenological approach, this study aims to (1) identify the specific challenges faced by female English teachers in maintaining a work-life balance and (2) explore the coping strategies they develop to manage these roles effectively.

The research findings indicate that participants navigate five interrelated challenges: time management constraints, demanding domestic/family roles, psychological and emotional burdens, social pressure stemming from gender expectations, and systemic issues within the work environment. To mitigate these obstacles, the teachers employ active strategies aligned with Lazarus and Folkman’s coping framework. These include problem-focused coping (structured time management, task prioritization, and seeking instrumental social support) and emotion-focused coping (seeking emotional validation, self-regulation through mindfulness and spirituality, engaging in leisure activities, and positive reframing). The study concludes that female teachers act as resilient agents in managing their dual identities. These findings provide critical insights for educational institutions and policymakers to foster a more gender-sensitive and supportive professional environment.
