Abstract

Wardani, Elvina Muhvita. 2025. Exploring English Teacher’s Strategies in Teaching Writing: A Case Study at Nurul Jadid Junior High School. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Syaiful Islam, M.Pd.

Keywords: Writing Skills, Descriptive Text, Teaching Strategies, EFL Context.

Writing is often considered the most challenging skill for EFL learners, requiring a balance of linguistic competence and creative organization. This research investigates the teaching strategies employed by an English teacher and explores students' perceptions regarding the development of descriptive writing skills among seventh-grade students at Nurul Jadid Junior High School. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, data were gathered through systematic classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with both teachers and students, and document analysis of student writing samples.

The findings reveal that the teacher implemented a multifaceted approach, primarily utilizing group-based learning and a "smart point" reward system to bolster student engagement and provide scaffolding for low-achieving students. Observations indicated high levels of student enthusiasm, particularly during direct practice sessions where students engaged in active writing tasks.

The results demonstrate that students responded positively to collaborative strategies, such as peer discussions and the use of model texts, which facilitated a deeper understanding of descriptive generic structures and vocabulary enrichment. Furthermore, the integration of contextual materials and interactive visual media significantly enhanced students' motivation and creative expression. The study concludes that the application of student-centered, interactive, and contextual strategies is highly effective in improving descriptive writing outcomes in the junior high school setting. These findings suggest that incorporating immediate feedback and reward mechanisms can effectively mitigate writing anxiety among young EFL learners.
